As human beings we are social beings with inherent needs for connection, belonging, and esteem. Without understanding and fully appreciating this universal human characteristic most of us develop a profound sense of guilt and isolation for having such intense needs. This is often complicated by our culture's idealization of independence and the resulting negativitiy surrounding perceptions of "dependency" or "neediness." Nonetheless, I fully believe that all of our behaviors are in some way or another, conscious or unconscious, effective or ineffective, related to an effort to get our needs met. Patterns of behavior reveal the 'stories' we attach to life experience and how we organize that experience. Together, our efforts to heal and our personal life scripts provide rich material for deep personal inquiry.
As a psychotherapist, my goal is to provide an emotionally safe and supportive holding environment within which one may examine his or her behaviors, inner thoughts, feelings, and beliefs in depth. This includes increasing one's awareness of emotional experiences in various contexts (family, work or school, social) as well as thoroughly examining the 'stories' one may attach to such experiences. Compassion, empathy, and validation provide the building blocks for self-understanding, forgiveness, acceptance, and eventually, integration. Life is complicated. Implementing change can be overwhelming, even paralyzing. Whatever you may be experiencing, I am here to offer hope. You do not have to face life's complexities alone.
